Dr. Rafael Grossmann Zamora is a trauma surgeon at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Maine. He and his team have been involved in the application of "virtual presence" to the initial care of injured patients also known as "teletrauma" for several years. He is part of the group that made EMMC the first hospital in Maine to be verified as a Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons. Their work has been recognized nationally. We must prepare our medical students to become the doctors that we will need for a healthier future. Despite the current medical crisis in our country, the US medical education system is producing doctors that aren’t allowed to practice medicine, unless they further specialize. Every year, thousands of new doctors are faced with an unfair and biased medico-legal system that forbids them to practice their craft. In addition, this senseless system offers them an early tasting of what healthcare burnout is all about. Dr. Grossmann shares what we can–and must–do before it’s too late. Originally from Venezuela, Dr. Rafael Grossmann is a surgeon at Portsmouth Regional Hospital. Over the past several years, he’s focused on the convergence of healthcare and technology innovation to enable digital transformation to enhance medical care and education. He is particularly interested in the paradoxical power of technology to coexist with better, more humane medical care. Dr. Rafael Grossmann, originally from Caracas, Venezuela, is a General, Trauma, Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic surgeon who now lives and practices in Maine, USA. As a FutureMed/ Singularity University graduate, his passion is about the intersection of Innovation Technology and Healthcare. He is one of the few GoogleGlass Explorers in the world, and was the FIRST Doctor to ever use Google Glass during live surgery (Google Glass In The Operating Room) and in Medical Ed ("OK Glass:..Teach me Medicine!"). Rafael was also a TEDx speaker at TEDxDirigo, 2011 ("An ipod could save a life") He has been invited to participate in the prestigious MedicineX conference in Stanford, Ca. He will be a featured Key Note speaker at the "Games For Health" conference, in Amsterdam, Holland, in October of this year. Practicing in a rural area like Maine, and being a telemedicine innovator, he is a strong believer on the power of technology to better connect providers and patients. He is convinced (and convincing) that the current developments in mobile and wearable platforms will exponentially improve Healthcare connectivity and communication, and result in a more efficient and intuitive, less expensive and ultimately better patient care. Rafael Grossmann es cirujano a tiempo completo. El ha enfocado su carrera en aprovechar el poder paradójico de la tecnología para humanizar y optimizar los servicios de salud. Cirujano, educador y futurista de la salud, el 20 de junio 2013, fue el primer doctor en utilizar Google Glass durante cirugía (actualmente enfocado en aplicaciones de MagicLeap y Hololens, en salud y educación). Siendo promotor de telemedicina, salud global, y medicina digital, el Dr. Grossmann cree en el poder de la tecnología para “aumentar” la salud y la educación, para mejorar la conexión entre proveedores de servicios de salud y sus pacientes.
